At Mercerville Elementary School, we believe in educating and nurturing the whole child- academically, socially, and emotionally- as each student grows through the elementary years. Our academic and enrichment programs are designed to inspire curiosity, build confidence, and foster a lifelong love of learning.
Our instructional program provides extended blocks of focused learning time in both literacy and mathematics. During literacy, students engage in a balanced approach that includes whole-group instruction, small guided reading groups, and literacy centers that promote comprehension, fluency, and critical thinking. Writing development is emphasized across all grade levels through authentic and meaningful opportunities to express ideas and strengthen communication skills.
All instruction at Mercerville aligns with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS), ensuring that our students are engaged in rigorous, relevant, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Students explore mathematical concepts through hands-on learning, discussion, and real-world application, while Science and Social Studies come alive through projects, experiments, and inquiry-based activities that connect classroom learning to the world around us.
In addition to core academics, students enjoy a well-rounded education through specialized classes in art, vocal and instrumental music (grades 3–5), foreign language for kids, media, and physical education/health. These experiences cultivate creativity, global awareness, and collaboration.
Technology plays an integral role in our classrooms. Our teachers and students use Promethean Boards, which are interactive flat panels, along with mobile devices and educational software, to enhance instruction, encourage engagement, and prepare students for a rapidly evolving digital world.
At Mercerville, we also place great emphasis on character education and social-emotional learning. Students learn peacemaking skills, problem-solving strategies, and ways to show empathy and kindness through classroom lessons, assemblies, and schoolwide initiatives. We celebrate the everyday heroes among us - those who include others, lend a helping hand, and make respectful, responsible choices.
Our vibrant PTA is a cornerstone of the Mercerville community. Their ongoing partnership enriches our students’ experiences through family events, book fairs, cultural programs, assemblies, and celebrations that bring our school together.
